The term ‘XY’ can be traced back to the 1880s when Chicago Daily News sports reporter coined the term when covering the then-named Chicago White Stockings games. Chicago, where the ballpark faced east and west, with home plate to the west, so that a not so common pitcher threw from the ‘X’ side with ‘Y’, hence, these not so common pitchers came to known as ‘XYs’.
